More than 30 NGOs participated in the Civitas Festival – A Vital Civic Space organized on September 22, 2023, in Odorheiu Secuiesc. The festival brought together the NGOs for a series of public discussions about the positive changes made by non-governmental organizations, as well as the future of NGOs.

Over 250 visitors participated in the activities within the festival. Civitas workshops focused on topics relevant to the local community, such as community and rural development, entrepreneurial development, or development opportunities for NGOs. In addition to attending workshops, visitors had the opportunity to interact with NGOs from the region and enjoyed local products displayed at one of the event venues.

”In the community, alongside the entrepreneurial sector and local administration, there is important to have a well-developed network of conscious NGOs - only then will society function in a healthy way. From this perspective, Odorheiu Secuiesc was at the forefront in the early '90s. With the ”Civitas Festival - A Vital Civic Space”, we highlighted interventions based on responsible community planning, leading to a significant social impact.”

ORBÁN ÁrpádDirector of Strategic Development

The Civitas Festival – A Vital Civic Space was organized as part of the ”Impact in the spotlight. Building trust in NGOs” project, through which we aimed to highlight the positive impact of non-governmental organizations and encourage people to discover the NGOs. It took place with the support of local partners: Székelyudvarhelyi Egyetemi Központ and Mini Transilvania Park.

The Civitas Festival – A Vital Civic Space in numbers:

  • 32 participating NGOs
  • 20 NGOs
  • 5 workshops

For me, non-governmental organizations are a form of officially exercising the role we have assumed in the community and a way to rediscover our common values.

What do the festival visitors say

In my opinion, non-governmental organizations are communities dedicated to preserving and promoting specific values, domains, and traditions. I believe that without NGOs, our traditions could not survive, and we are grateful to those who take on the responsibility and contribute to the preservation of rural values.

What do the festival visitors say

NGOs play an important role (or should play an important role). In rural areas, they represent a hope for preserving and transmitting the traditional way of life and popular values. Personally, I believe it is important for the residents of the area to recognize their value.

What do the festival visitors say

The NGO is also an organization that aids the development of rural areas and makes efforts to address arising issues.

What do the festival visitors say

The purpose of NGOs could be to take on the role of 'interpreters,' explaining in simple terms to ordinary people how important the development and preservation of rural areas are.
